Social Support Centers advice to parents on dealing with adolescents
The Department of Social Support Centers, through its new issues, has given a number of advices and directions to the parents on how to deal with their kids. The advices are focused on how to face the difficulties when dealing with their adolescent children.
The directions stress the importance of having awareness, culture and background about the nature of adolescence period. Thus they can avoid confrontation with them and embarrassing situation which lead to adolescents’ disobedience, indifference or violent response from the parents.
Parents should understand the changing and instable nature of adolescent emotions which form parts of his character. Parents shall adopt debate and persuasion approach. He shall understand in a simple way that the decision is his. He shall be responsible for his decision. Thus he feels confident and that we respect and appreciate him.
The advices also deal with the risks that adolescents face when using modern technologies, which have become part of our daily life which we cannot dispense with. These technologies always have their merits and demerits. The internet is one of these modern technologies which have recently dominated our life. The nature of its use differs from one community to another according to the culture and vision of that community.
The advices confirm that the problem lies with the fact that most parents are of medium knowledge about the technology and modern communications. Some of them feel proud because their children spend 6 hours in front of computer screen and even they do not participate in families’ gatherings. Many of them still believe that their children are safe at home, which was the case until some time ago, but the reality has changed and many things have changed as well.
They have drawn attention to the fact that the picture is not real to a great extent. Many adolescents fall victim to misuse of the internet and internet crimes which we read about in newspapers and other media means. These practices tell about the absence of parent's role in educating their children on how to follow the correct way. In addition to parents role in showing their children the right way there are also other institutions which have an effective role in instilling the positive concept of internet use. These include universities, schools, worship places and religion scholars. They shall educate the community on the positive and negative aspects of the internet.
