Lieutenant Selma Al Kaabi from the Ministry of Interior shared her experience as the first Emirati woman to train police dogs at Abu Dhabi Police, at a seminar organized by the American University in Ras Al Khaimah on Thursday, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

She explained that her ambitions drove her to join the UAE search and rescue team, representing an internationally working woman. After succeeding in various specialized courses, she received an international certification qualifying her to participate in international rescue and search operations. She said that she joined many specialized courses in the UAE and abroad, gaining numerous international certifications.

The seminar shed light on many experiences and presented work papers related to women. Consultant Khalifa Al Mahrazi of Dubai Courts presented a paper about the actual state of women in the world, and praised the achievements that UAE in terms of improving women’s status.

Dr. Nizar Al Ani presented a paper on the faculty of mothers and family sciences, explaining the roles of the faculty and its curricula. Jamila Al Zaabi, the first female Emirati paramedic, shared her experience with the audience, talking about the roles she played, how she began her career and her milestones during her career.

“UAE paid great attention to women in different ways. This care resulted in raising a generation of women capable of constituting a remarkable element of UAE society, and of achieving many outlooks in both private and public sectors,” said Lieutenant Selma Al Kaabi.

Al Kaabi further added that she had been keen on being distinguished since her early learning stages, and she always thought of taking the right step to serve her community, by taking on missions that no one had before.

She pointed out that her career which spans for more than 10 years in police work was full of challenges, opportunities and achievements, accompanied by a great deal of patience, determination and diligence. She believes that the police leadership played a prominent role in encouraging her and urging her to take the initiative, in addition to rewarding her for her achievements, which helped in achieving her ambitious goals to serve the society and her beloved country.

Selma said that her career started as soon as she graduated from high school where she joined the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, and was enrolled in the new female recruits, where she came first in the physical fitness course.

She added that her police career began with the Exits and Airports Security Department in Abu Dhabi, then in Al Ain. She returned after that to Abu Dhabi, and worked with the Department of Security Inspection as a trainer of dogs. This shift renewed her desire to prove her capabilities, and she chose to train sniffer dogs. She mentioned the first dog she trained saying that it was 14 months old.

She added that she learned many values and principles, and that she was keen to gain the respect of others. She faced some challenges during her training of dogs, but her choice and passion for this task helped her overcome all obstacles, they also had a constructive affect, thus achieving constant distinction in her dog training work.

“I gave my job the highest priority, determination and diligence. I joined the promotion course to become an assistant and won the first place. In 2009, I received a college degree in Law from the Police Academy in Dubai, and was adequately rewarded by Abu Dhabi Police more than once,” she added. “This motivated me to give more, based on my belief in the importance of the dedication at work and the love of the country, because work is not just a duty.
