Abu Dhabi Police Detained 23 Asian workers, including 6 staying illegally in the country, who were managing gambling games in a public area for a small amount of money in return, their tools for organizing the games were a belt, a screw driver and an ironing table.
Sudden raids executed by Abu Dhabi Police resulted in detaining those workers who were convicted in three separate incidents of managing and organizing gambling games in public at a shopping center in Abu Dhabi. One of the detained was also convicted with promoting fake UAE currency with an AED 100 fake note found in his possession.
Brigadier Omer Al Muhairi, Vice Director General of Police Operations in the General Headquarters of Abu Dhabi Police stressed that police forces will continue such security raids to curb those practices that are against the law and culture of the UAE, noting that gambling is a habit that was imported from abroad, and the police will not hesitate to detain offenders.
He explained that raids targeted one specific area in Abu Dhabi after collecting information about some illegal workers who are managing and organizing gambling games in a public area. The area was searched resulting in siting workers while gambling, and they were detained.
Al Muhairi stressed that the police prevents all practices that are against the customs and traditions of the society and it will not show any leniency in enforcing laws on offenders, noting the continuous development achieved by Abi Dhabi Police in crime prevention.
He said that Abu Dhabi Police is keen to interact with the society proceeding from its belief in the importance of the participation of the society and its trust and satisfaction, on the basis of the priorities of the Ministry of Interior Strategic plan.
He valued the information provided by some community members on incidents, considering that the care they extend in terms of the security of the country demonstrates their awareness, and the strong bonds between different segments of the society on one hand and the Police on the other in facing any security challenge regardless the level of its gravity. He affirmed that the police will always remain the watchful eye and will always be ready to stand up against any party that may try to harm our achievements in the country.
He said that detention operations took place on different dates during the current year, starting from the date when the Criminal Investigations Department received certain information about this illegal act which is managed by Asian gamblers.
He added: “investigations proved that the suspects gamble in a game called Rotating the Belt in which the game manager folds the belt few time, and fastens it on the table with the screw driver, then the player pulls the belt swiftly, if the belt remained rolled and fixed to the screw the player wins AED 100, if not he loses the same amount.”
Colonel Dr. Rashid Muhammed Bu Rasheed, Director of Criminal Investigations Department in Abu Dhabi Police continued: “the suspects were using ironing table for the game because it was easy to use and move. Investigations showed that the value of gambling in the belt rotating game reached AED 100 which the player pays before starting the game, and the managers used to convince players that they may make thousands of dirhams if they continue to win.”
He added: “workforces were established to set a suitable plan to detain suspects after carefully confirming the information received about them. The suspects used to put their tables in car parking slots and in hidden places and behind trees, and they used to carefully choose their clients from Asian nationalities to avoid being caught by the police.
