additional fines by Abu Dhabi traffic police last year for different violations
Abu Dhabi traffic police have impounded 267 vehicles for one month in addition to Dh500 fine and 4 traffic points for various kinds of violations by motorists during the last year.
Violations included littering the capital by throwing wastes from their vehicles and spitting on public roads while driving. This was done as part of strict enforcement of traffic legislations.
Lt. Colonel Ahmed Al Shuhi, Director of the Capital Traffic Department, Department of Traffic and patrols at Abu Dhabi Police said that the his department pays a lot of attention to keeping the city clean and maintain its good appearance.
He urged motorists to abide by the law and do not throw rubbish on streets to avoid punishment. They should also notify the other passengers in their vehicles not to do so. He asked parents to educate their children on keeping the city clean and not throwing trash through the car windows instead put it in the designated places.
Motorists whose vehicles were seized also have to pay Dh100 for each day of seizure if it is the first time, for the second time he should pay Dh200 for each day of seizure and pledge not to repeat the offence any more. If the offence is repeated for the third time he would not be given any chance to pay against the vehicle seizure, and the punishment will be effected on the spot. The payment of money in lieu of seizure is not automatic, but it depends on concerned discretion of the authority.
Release of foreign and private sector vehicles entails parking fees of Dh50 for each day of seizure. Vehicle owner can ask for vehicle release by paying Dh100 for each day of seizure. Again the decision of release depends on the concerned discretion of the authority.
With regard to the motorists who are booked for parking their vehicles in prohibited areas, the amendment of the Federal Law Number (12) for 2007 and the Ministerial Decision Number (721) for 2008 identified such offences in accordance with their gravity.
Parking the vehicle in front of Fire Hydrant, in areas assigned to disabled="disabled" persons or emergency vehicles should entail payment of Dh1000 and 4 traffic points. Stopping the vehicle on the road without a reason entails Dh500 in fine and traffic points.
Parking the vehicle in the yellow box and zebra crossing entails Dh500 in fine. Parking the vehicle behind other cars and block them entails Dh300 in fine. Stopping the vehicle in prohibited or on road shoulder, for reasons other than emergencies, entails a fine of Dh200.

Colonel (Dr.) Salah Obeid Al Ghoul, Director of Law Respect Culture Office at the Secretariat General of the office of HH Deputy prime Minister and Minister of Interior said "Technical skills and practical experience alone are not enough. The motorist should have self-criticism derived from his conscience in order to respect the law and others rights. The responsibility of drivers and passengers here is ethical. Parents must instill in their children the values of good citizenship and law respect culture".
