A seminar organized by Abu Dhabi Police CD on efforts to fight electronic crime revealed that 235 crimes occurred last year. They included online fraud, electronic piracy, nuisance via internet, bank account and credit cards thefts, and phone calls theft and sale.
 
The 4-day seminar held at Holiday inn on Monday was sponsored by Major Gen. Mohammed Al Awadhi Al Menhali, director – general of Police Operations at Abu Dhabi Police, in cooperation with Training Department at Abu Dhabi Police.
 
Maktoum Al Shareefi, director of the Capital Police urged individuals and institutions to unify efforts to fight all kinds of electronic crimes to protect our society against its risks.
 
He emphasized that Abu Dhabi Police is combating these crimes proficiently in such a manner that it becomes able to arrest offenders and reduce occurrence of these crimes, as well as to increase public awareness in dealing with the internet, and establish technical labs an teams to monitor those using the internet illegally.
 
For his part Col. Dr. Rashid Mohammed bu Rashid, head of organized crime section at Abu Dhabi Police noted the efforts of Abu Dhabi Police in fighting electronic crimes. He said, “Abu Dhabi police introduced specialized units to fight these crimes since 2004, such as the branch of electronic crimes which is concerned with operations of criminal investigations and information gathering”.
 
The staff of this branch, he added, received quality training inside and outside UAE, in accordance with the best international policing practices in this field, which has positively impacted the investigation process in such crimes, and led to reduction of crime rates.
 
Lt. Col. Faisal Al Shammari, information security officer from Abu Dhabi Police spoke in the first day about digital prostitution and its damaging effects, technology and sexual exploitation of children and the impact of the internet on children who tend to imitate what is published in the internet.
 
He pointed out some negative phenomena involving students as result of technology. He also focused on the efforts of Abu Dhabi Police to confront electronic crimes and on the role of media to addressing such issues.
 
First Lt. Khalifa Al Shiryani tackled financial electronic crimes, method of committing them, their types and characteristics. He also spoke about credit cards forgery.
