Eve teasing and harassment of women at shopping malls, streets and other public places is becoming a worrying phenomenon in UAE. According to the general headquarters of Abu Dhabi Police, the Police have arrested 31 offenders in 2003 and in 2004 they have arrested 60 eve teasers. In 2005 there was a decline with 13 eve teasers rounded up, but in 2006, the police caught 63 eve teasers and the main culprits seem to be locals according to repots.
The higher authorities have adopted stringent measures throughout the country to counter this problem. According to new laws adopted to eradicate this phenomenon, stiff penalties have been imposed on the perpetrators of this crime, to the extent of a fine of dh60, 000 and one year imprisonment for those who repeat the crime. The new law has been widely welcomed by all the social segments.
