Abu Dhabi Police detained 3 individuals from a Gulf nation who were trying to smuggle two rented cars at one of the country’s exits to a nearby country. Lt. General His Highness Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, valued the positive role and the security sense that the car rent agency had by equipping its vehicles with a technical system to identify the locations of its vehicles, which assisted in foiling the smuggling attempt.
Lt. General His Highness Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed stressed that based on the principle saying “security is the responsibility of all”, the use of the modern technology in all sectors is contributing in limiting crimes and in speeding the process of detaining offenders to promote security and stability in the country.
HH commended the security cooperation between the Abu Dhabi Police and the car rent company leading to the detention of the suspects before completing their smuggling operations.
The suspects –all unemployed- admitted committing the smuggling crime of two 2012 model vehicles namely: Range Rover Sport and Audi Q5, in line with their plan to smuggle and steal the vehicles.
Abu Dhabi Police had received a complaint from a car rent agency in Abu Dhabi, mentioning that the above mentioned vehicles were about to be smuggled after the staff of the agency found out that the vehicles have reach a border exit. The staff reached to this conclusion with the help of tracking devices that are implanted in the vehicles. Notably, it is unlawful as per car rent contracts to drive the vehicles and depart the country.
Colonel Dr. Rashed Muhammed Bu Rashid, Director of Criminal Investigation Department in Abu Dhabi Police explained that once the compliant was received, the police teams rushed to the exit point and detained the offenders before exiting the country.
He added that the two drivers and an accompanying person were detained while trying to exit the country from a border exit point, noting that the rate of smuggling vehicles has decreased significantly during the past years.
The owner of the car rent agency valued the efforts of the Ministry of Interior, and its quick response to detain and return the vehicles to the agency, preventing them from being smuggled abroad.
